We own the Greene Machine nitro funny car in Perth, Western Australia,
and were just browsing the list. The owners are Allan & Cheryl Greene
and the hometown is Carlisle, Western Australia. Allan Greene is Crew Chief.
The Driver is Allan Dobson from Quinns Rocks, Western Australia. You might
like to check out the progress on our new local strip (combined drag racing
and speedway) which is currently under construction at http://www.motorplex.com.au/
We don't get the chance to race much in Australia -- the powers that be
have decided to eliminate Nitro Funny Car from competition and we can now
only match race. Also, as we live in Western Australia our next nearest
strip is 1,780 miles away, so it's not that easy to make it. Perth is the
most isolated capital city in the world. Lucky for us our promoter is a
funny car lover so we get some opportunities.
We match raced the top fueler of Robin Kirby last Boxing Day, and at
Ravenswood's final competition meeting, after the top fuelers of Robin Kirby
and Rachelle Splatt finished their final run, we had the honor of doing a
3/4 track burnout and THE FINAL RUN -- quite an emotional event. That was on
April 8. We are now looking forward to completion of the Kwinana Motorplex
in November this year. All is going according to plan. We are also in the
process of putting together a web page for the Greene Machine which
currently lives at http://donald.webtec.net.au/~nitro/.
I've also attached a photo.
There are only two nitro Funny Cars in Western Australia -- the other is
owned by Graeme and Lloyd Jones, but we both blew our engines on the same
run some 18 months ago, and they have not rebuilt yet. In fact, in Australia
at the moment there are probably only three running nitro floppers – a
very sad state of affairs. Also, the top fuelers seem to be dropping off as
well. Rachelle Splatt is taking an indefinite break -- her last run will be
at the Winternationals in Queensland -- and it's also rumored that Charlie
DiFillippo is also taking a break.
There is talk of Chicago Shoot Out match racing between funny cars and
top fuelers -- but this will all be in the Eastern States if it eventuates
-- and for us to travel that far costs a lot more than we could earn. Also,
we don't have a major sponsor, so we have to run to a very tight budget.
So, it looks like we'll just stay in Western Australia and be ready for
when our promoter needs us -- hopefully the first meeting at the new Kwinana
Motorplex. NITRO IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO, and it has even been suggested that
we should step down to Alcohol F/C.
But as Allan (Greene) said to Dragster Australia, "I
didn't buy a nitro Funny Car to convert it to alcohol. I'm not impressed at
all. It's a huge investment to be relegated to a lower category without
anyone asking you first, though I understand that it's hard to run a bracket
when there's only five cars in the country. As long as we get to race our
cars I suppose it doesn't matter too much, but at the moment there's only
one promoter who is willing to give us a run, and that's here at
Ravenswood."
Here are the times from when we raced against Gary Densham in our debut:
